In 1986, Nick and Liz meet and fall in love. They eventually marry and Liz gives birth to twin daughters, Annie and Hallie, but she and Nick divorce soon after with each gaining custody of one daughter. Twelve years later in 1998, the twins are coincidentally sent to the same all-girls summer camp in Maine. The twin sisters hatch a plan to get their parents to reconcile and remarry. Each twin trains the other to impersonate her, with the intent to switch places at the end of summer camp.
