The King’s Wife

With music and lyrics by three-time Grammy nominated songwriter Jamie Floyd and a book by award-winning playwright Mêlisa Annis, The King’s Wife is an imaginative retelling of the story of Queen Katherine of Aragon and her ladies in waiting at the Tudor Court. It’s a narrative centered around love, power and politics as they navigate a world that requires courage and friendship when faced with extraordinary challenges and loss. Directed by Tamilla Woodard. Arrangements by Jamie Floyd and Jared Stein. Music Supervision by Jared Stein. Produced by special arrangement with Jennifer Kranz.

Playwright’s Note

How is historical narrative influenced by who its narrators are?

The King’s Wife emerged from my deep desire to unearth and honor the voices of those whose stories have been relegated to the footnotes of history. In writing this musical, I embarked on a journey of research, imagination, and heartfelt collaboration—one that led me to dusty archives, forgotten letters, and whispered legends of resilience and quiet rebellion amongst the women of the sixteenth century Tudor Court. The King’s Wife reimagines a period in the life of Katherine of Aragon, not merely as a queen defined by her marriage, but as a resilient and dynamic force who tried to reshape the kingdom. As the first wife of Henry VIII, Katherine’s story unfolds amidst the turmoil of court politics and personal sacrifice, revealing the profound strength and determination that challenged the traditional roles imposed upon her. In parallel, Anne Boleyn is portrayed not as a scheming temptress, but as an unwilling participant in a ruthless patriarchal system, leaving her to bear the weight of one man’s desire. Writing The King’s Wife was never about retelling the story we all know about the Tudor Court, it was about breathing new life into it—melding rich historical textures with a contemporary heartbeat that speaks to today’s challenges.

It takes a village to create a show like this and it doesn’t happen overnight. Collaborating with Jamie Floyd, whose songs capture the heart, Tamilla Woodard, whose leadership and direction guide us through every challenge, Jared Stein, whose musical direction brings the score to life, and our producer Jennifer Kranz, whose steady hand keeps us on course, I’ve had the privilege of watching a simple idea, sketched out around a table and a cup of coffee in The East Village of NYC, grow into something quite remarkable. Together, our shared creativity has woven something far greater than the sum of our individual talents, and that is why I love working in theatre. This collaboration is a reminder that through storytelling, we unify, inspire, and create something greater than what any one of us could ever achieve alone.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to The Spark Lab at Paramount for joining us on this journey. We are delighted to collaborate with you and share this experience with your audience today.

– Mêlisa Annis
