Usher Program Things to Know
Key Locations
Ushers should be able to direct patrons to the following areas:
- Restrooms (including accessible facilities)
- Drinking fountain
- Coat check (hearing devices, booster seats, first‑aid kit, lost and found, sign‑in sheets)
- Open bar locations
- Elevator
- ATM
- Manager’s office
- Will Call
- Emergency exits
General Information
No matter your post, you may be asked a wide variety of questions. Take time to learn how the theatre operates so you can assist confidently. If you don’t know an answer, let the patron know you’ll find out and return with the information. “I don’t know” is not an acceptable response.
Ushers should be familiar with:
- The history of Paramount.
- Running time of the performance.
- Whether there is an intermission (and its length).
- Any lobby activities such as raffles, giveaways or pre‑show events.
- Liquor restrictions — no alcohol is permitted outside the Paramount or North Island Center buildings. This is the law.
Community Information
Patrons may also ask about nearby amenities. Ushers should know the basics, including:
- Parking
- 90‑minute street parking spots are free after 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, after 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays and all day on Sundays.
- Locations of nearby parking garages and lots
- Valet availability (offered for most shows)
- Local restaurant options
House Rules
These guidelines help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone:
- Drinks are allowed in the seating area for most performances.
- Food is typically not allowed, except popcorn and candy for Movie Mondays.
- Photo/video/audio policies vary by production and will be shared at the pre‑show ushers’ meeting.
- ALL Broadway Season shows have a “NO PHOTO OR VIDEO OF THE STAGE” policy.
- Lobby lights flash at 5 minutes and 2 minutes before showtime as a warning. Additionally, an announcement will be made telling patrons that the show will be starting soon.
- Patrons cannot exit through Aisles 1 or 5 at the front of the theatre except during emergencies (Usher Blockade).
- Patrons may not go backstage for any reason (Usher Blockade).
- Balcony access from the orchestra is only via the Grand Gallery staircase, the original Lobby staircase or the elevator.
