    PLEASE NOTE: Students must receive college credit. All internships with Aurora Civic Center Authority are unpaid. Students must have written recommendation from the staff or faculty member at their college/university that has oversight of the internship program. Recommendation must be submitted with the application.  Applicant will not be allowed to start the internship without one of the following: transcript confirming that the student will receive college credit for internship, proof of class registration, or certified letter from the participating institute.

    Assistant Technical Director (Full-Time)

    Paramount Theatre/Aurora Civic Center Authority (ACCA), an innovative organization located on Stolp Island in the Fox River in the heart of the richly diverse community of historic Aurora, Illinois (one hour from downtown Chicago), is seeking an Assistant Technical Director. ACCA is the parent organization, which also includes a 501(c)3 arm under the name of Paramount Arts Centre, Inc. It operates three performance venues: the 6,000-person RiverEdge Park, the 1,843-seat landmark Paramount Theatre, and the 165-seat, newly renovated Copley Theatre. In July of 2024 it will also open Stolp Island Theatre: a 9,000 square foot development that includes an intimate 98-seat 4,600-square-foot theater. ACCA produces and presents over 500 performances each year, including star-studded touring productions, a self-produced Broadway Series of musicals and the self-produced Bold Series for an annual audience of 350,000 patrons from over 250 communities. ACCA proudly operates the Paramount School of the Arts in the new John C. Dunham Aurora Arts Center, right next door to Paramount Theatre in downtown Aurora. Paramount Theatre also hosts free community events, $1 Classic Movie Mondays and its opulent interiors provide a spectacular backdrop for private functions such as wedding receptions or corporate galas. Across the street from Paramount Theatre are the gorgeous Meyer Ballrooms, which play host to multiple wedding receptions and rental events throughout the year.

    The ideal candidate is skilled at drafting scenery in AutoCAD and possesses experience in production scene shops and regional theatre. Preferred qualifications include 3-5 years’ management experience as well as experience with automation, pneumatics, Microsoft Excel, rigging, and basic wiring.

    DEPARTMENT – Production

    DIRECT REPORTING – Technical Directors

    WORKS CLOSELY WITH – Technical Directors, Associate Technical Director, Scene Shop Crew, and Production staff

    POSITION STATUS & SCHEDULE – Full time exempt; generally 8-9 hour days Monday-Friday; extended hours during tech and load-in; some weekends, evenings and holidays

    COMPENSATION – Annual salary commensurate with experience and skill set with a minimum salary of $45,000. Position also qualifies for an excellent benefits package including health insurance, paid time off package, and matching 401k.

    HIRE DATE – Start as soon as June 10, 2024 or mutually agreed upon date

    POSITION SUMMARY – The Asst TD, as part of a 4-person Technical Direction team, will help lead the scene shop in day-to-day activities, predominately focusing on drafting, along with administrative, maintenance, and preproduction tasks.

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES – The Asst TD will help lead the scene shop crew in conjunction with other Technical Direction staff in the construction and installation of various projects, both within and outside the organization. The Asst TD will participate in the creation of and notation of construction drawings in AutoCAD, lead crews, attend some technical rehearsals, make and track purchases made for each production, participate in scheduling shop and overhire crews, create and execute maintenance schedules for equipment, and help with materials tracking/reconciliation.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • In partnership with TD team, create technical and construction drawings for Scene Shop staff, crew, and other production departments using computer drafting programs such as AutoCAD
    • Notate draftings created by other Technical Direction staff
    • Technical drawing creation and CNC toolpathing (experience not required)
    • Lead shop and stage crew through portions of load-in and installation of sets into performance venues (2nd and 3rd shifts are possible but infrequent)
    • Lead shop and stage crew during notes calls focused on “punch lists”
    • Lead shop and stage crew through portion of strike (2nd and 3rd shifts are possible but infrequent)
    • Aid in rigging preparation
    • Track spending and reconcile expenses in relation to budgets
    • Organize and submit receipts and invoices
    • Participate in IATSE scheduling and staffing for productions and other scene shop labor needs
    • Create pack lists for transport of scenic elements from the Scene Shop to the performance venue for load-in
    • Contribute to the maintenance of stage & shop equipment
    • Some carpentry, metal work, wiring and loading/unloading
    • Other duties as required by TD Team and Production staff

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

    • Drafting creation in AutoCAD
    • Minimum of two seasons/years of experience working in professional theatre
    • Superior organization skills

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

    • 3-5 years in management in a commercial scene shop or regional theatre environment
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
    • Able to comfortably lift and manipulate 40 pounds
    • Basic carpentry, metal work, wiring and pneumatics
    • Experience loading in large-scale scenery
    • Experience with Creative Conners automation
    • Basic rigging knowledge – ETCP certification preferred

    • Must ensure that all spaces are properly set in a timely manner.
    • Follow layouts as described on the event sheets and floor plans without guidance.
    • Assist is resetting equipment while an event is occurring.
    • Responsible for timely and safe breakdown of rooms after event completion.
    • Organize and clean banquet storage rooms and linen storage shelves.
    • Assist in moving concessions products and bar equipment.
    • Change the marquee.
    • Launder, fold, and place linens.
    • To assist guests in various areas such as coat check, greeting & directing guests, taking/scanning tickets, passing out programs, selling merchandise, seating guests and other misc. duties.
    • Responsible for timely arrival and attendance at a pre-event meeting.
    • Able to work with volunteer ushers and also clients provided staff or ushers.
    • Be a friendly and helpful face to guests in our venues.

    • Prep, cook and serve both food (such as pizza, cookies, etc.) and coffee items in a timely manner in a high-volume quick service kitchen environment
    • Maintain café cleanliness at all times
    • Execute proper cleaning and sanitation requirements
    • Interact with guests in a friendly, courteous and helpful way
    • Read and follow printed instructions for food preparation
    • Have a flexible schedule and submit availability a minimum of 3 months in advance
    • Work closely with Front of House management, beverage staff and café personnel
    • Adhere to the Paramount Theatre & North Island Center Guidelines and Regulations
    • Accurately report wasted inventory items to the Front of House Manager

    HIRE DATE – Immediate

    POSITION SUMMARY – Under the direct supervision of the Special Events Director, the Event Manager is responsible for generating and driving event sales to include, but not limited to, social gatherings, weddings, and meetings. Works closely with clients and other departments to determine event-specific details and day-of event management to ensure that all aspects of the event are planned and properly executed.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES-

    • Provide initial date availability to inquiries including pricing and package options to potential bookings via phone, e-mail, and walk-ins.
    • Create, send, and follow up on initial booking contracts and deposits.
    • Actively upsell additional service options by maintaining consistent and effective sales tactics.
    • Respond to sales leads within 24 hours.
    • Confirm invoice/billing information is correct and up to date – ensure special orders are correctly allocated.
    • Collect and process final payments prior to events, and follow through with direct billing clients to ensure payments are received within designated time frame.
    • Have a complete working knowledge of ACCA’s standard operating procedures and event protocol, including concession policies, and money handling policies after initial training.
    • Coordinate event details with Paramount staff after event specifics are turned over from the Rentals Manager.
    • Work closely with clients to acquire and confirm all event details such as layout, timeline etc.
    • Utilize event details to create custom floor plans and Event Sheets to be distributed throughout the organization.
    • Gather final event information including guest count, beverages, special orders and floor plans.
    • Communicate with the Special Events Director and other personnel concerning the set-up and removal of all necessary tables, chairs, podiums, etc. for all rental events.
    • Oversee and manage staff pre and post-event including Banquet Set-up Crew.
    • Assist with physical set-up and tear-down of all rental events, as needed. This includes set-up and tear-down of tables, chairs, podiums, etc.
    • Coordinate event caterers, valet, and vendors as necessary.

    POSITION SUMMARY – Assist the Event Coordinators with aspects of rental events including event preparations, events day-of, closing out after each event, and re-setting venue equipment after event.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES –

    • Have a complete working knowledge of ACCA’s standard operating procedures and event protocol, including concession policies, and money handling policies after training.
    • Follow Event Sheet for each event that includes all details for all rental events.
    • Communicate with the Special Events Director, Event Coordinators, Banquet Set-up Crew and other personnel concerning the set-up and removal of all necessary tables, chairs, podiums, etc. for all rental events.
    • Work during the event with event caterers, valet, and vendors as necessary.
    • Follow room layouts and event programming.
    • Assist the Event Coordinator to oversee and manage staff pre and post-event including Banquet Set-up Crew.
    • Assist the Event Coordinator to manage all staff during events including bar, security, cleaning, house crew.
    • Wash all in-house linens used during rental events.
    • Purchase some concessions items (i.e. bar fruit).
    • Ensure that the function runs smoothly and efficiently.
    • Post-event evaluation with appropriate staff, as well as post-event closeout documentation.
    • Manage a point of sales system and provide reports as needed.
    • Change marquee before or after events.
    • Complete tasks with attention to detail.
    • Assist the Event Coordinator with duties at all venues, including Meyer Ballroom, Paramount Theatre, Copley Theatre, and RiverEdge Park.
    • Assist with Emergency Evacuation and First Aid for all event guests.
    • In conjunction with and Event Coordinator, meet with potential clients during a site visit to facilitate renting our venues.

    • Performs cleaning functions for area(s) assigned to them each day, which include but not limited to: vacuuming carpets, dust mopping and wet mopping, dusting, damp wiping surfaces, cleaning and disinfection bathroom surfaces; using properly diluted chemicals; using the right cleaning equipment and supplies for each area
    • Performs specialty-cleaning functions for area(s) assigned to them each day, which includes but not limited to: projects such as wall and window washing, cleaning areas that have been vacated, vent cleaning, sweeping stairwells, vacuuming elevator tracks, shower and tile scrubbing, and special disinfecting cleaning
    • Stock supplies in restrooms as needed

    POSITION SUMMARY – The Production Manager assists and helps to lead and facilitate the daily operations and administration of the production department in support of the mission, artistic vision, and fiscal sustainability of the company.

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES – Engage with staff, affiliates and production teams to support the production department’s involvement in all produced events, including Broadway and Bold Series Shows, Stolp Island Theatre productions, and other events. This shall include management of design development and execution, budgets, calendars, and facilities. Maintain understanding of all aspects of productions in order to facilitate needs throughout the advancing, pre-production, build, rehearsals, load-in, tech, previews, run and load-out of produced shows.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Work with production staff and department heads to coordinate and implement schedules for pre-production deadlines, rehearsals, load-in, tech, performances and load-out
    • Schedule and lead creative team and production meetings as assigned; guide design development and implementation to achieve artistic and administrative goals with available resources, staffing and scheduling parameters
    • Facilitate timely communication and provide production support as needed
    • Provide on-site support during load-ins, tech, previews and load-outs for productions; represent ACCA in work with production teams to reconcile challenges
    • Read all daily production reports, production schedules and building schedules to identify and resolve challenges; communicate information to colleagues as needed and ensure timely resolution of issues
    • With PMA, provide production support for educational programming, and new play development
    • Participate in the editing of all Playbill/program content and other public relations and marketing materials
    • Facilitate job searches by writing and distributing postings, reviewing resumes and conducting interviews as needed
    • Assist department heads as needed in the onboarding and management of their employees
    • With VP and DoP, acclimate creative team members to the area and ACCA venues
    • With VP and DoP, develop and manage rental policies and agreements for space, equipment and production elements
    • Coordinate with VP, DoP, department heads, Operations staff and Production to maintain and improve production facilities (i.e. office space, storage space, rehearsal space, performance space, scene shop, property shop, costume shop, crafts shop, wig shop, green room) for daily operations and production needs
    • Collaborate with VP, DoP, PMA to develop, implement and administer the safety program to advance occupational health and safety policies, equipment purchases and maintenance, training and certifications; ensure corresponding records are written and compiled
    • With VP and DoP, make recommendations to reduce risks, injuries and claims
    • Uphold strict confidentiality and professionalism with regard to current and future productions, casting, design, staffing, budgets, salaries and all other sensitive aspects of the production process

    • Knowledge of and experience with theatrical unions (AEA, SDC, USA, IATSE, CFM/AFM)
    • Superior written and verbal communication, organization, time management and diplomacy skills
    • Adept computer and accounting skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
    • Capacity to approach challenges and stressful situations in a calm, creative and personable manner

    POSITION STATUS & SCHEDULE – Full time exempt. In collaboration with Director of Production and TD staff, span of day and days off can be somewhat flexible. Shop schedule is generally Monday-Friday, 8-9 hours a day. Extended hours occur during load-in and tech including some nights, weekends and holidays, and time-sensitive needs sometimes occur outside scheduled hours.

    COMPENSATION – Salary starting at $70,000 with pay commensurate with experience; excellent benefits package including health insurance, paid holidays, vacation, personal and sick time, paid parental/family leave, 401K with employer match, and complimentary tickets.

    START DATE – As soon as April 8, 2024 or mutually agreed upon date

    POSITION SUMMARY – Technical Director is responsible for working in tandem with the other Technical Director in the management of Scene Shop operations and employees (including Associate TD and Assistant TD), assessment of scenic designs, and the management of scenic installations for in-house productions, which currently consist of 4 Broadway Series musicals and the Paramount Performance Camp production in Paramount Theatre, 3 Bold Series productions in Copley Theatre, and an upcoming open-ended production in our newest venue, Stolp Island Theatre. Duties include oversight of scenic construction, installation, maintenance, and strike.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Budget Management
      • Work with VP of Productions to establish scenic budgets for productions, overhead, and capital improvements
      • Manage Scene Shop payroll, routine Scene Shop expenses (overhead budget), and individual production budgets; work with Technical Direction Team to track and reconcile expenses and prepare expense receipts
      • Collaborate with Scenic Designers, Production Management and CEO to align budgetary aims with design integrity
    • Scene Shop & Personnel Management
      • Supervise Associate TD, Assistant TD, core Scene Shop crew, and overhire employees
      • With Associate TD and IASTE Local 2, hire additional overhire employees for scenic construction, load-in, and strike as needed
      • Provide consistent oversight and guidance for construction in the Scene Shop and during load-ins
      • Oversee incoming shipments and returns for the Scenic department
      • Manage Scene Shop supplies, equipment, inventories, rentals from stock, and space; supervise TD Team and Shop Staff in the maintenance of an organized, clean, safe, well-functioning work environment
    • Miscellaneous
      • Field requests for special projects from other departments as well as outside organizations; make recommendations regarding special projects to VP of Production and CEO and execute outside projects if and when they are approved
      • Additional duties as assigned by VP of Production, Director of Production, or other senior staff member

    *For the following duties, and in collaboration with the other Technical Director, the Technical Director functions as TD on-point for selected Broadway Series and Bold Series productions and/or will assign and oversee Associate TD to function as TD on-point for productions in the Bold Series and other small venues*

    • Pre-Production
      • Read and become thoroughly familiar with the scripts for upcoming productions
      • In partnership with other Technical Direction staff, attend and participate in design meetings, production meetings, designer runs, technical rehearsals and, if necessary, preview performances
    • Design, Pricing, & Drafting
      • Review and interpret scenic designs to assess logistical feasibility, safety, and cost
      • Reconcile incongruities between versions of scenic designs and coordinate with the Audio Lighting and Media Supervisor to reconcile incongruities between scenic designs, light and audio plots, and media specifications
      • With the help of other TD staff, assign and participate as needed in the creation of technical and construction drawings for Scene Shop crew and other production departments using drafting programs such as AutoCAD
      • Purchase all show-specific materials for scenic fabrication and supervise timely inclusion of materials into designs
      • Create rigging plots and line set schedules for productions
      • Design and create all automation systems, plots, and programming (setting limits and speeds) for productions
    • Build & Load In
      • Conduct appropriate research to support scenic builds and construction methods as well as the design intention
      • Participate in research and development (R&D) of unique scenic elements
      • In collaboration with Director of Production, create and adhere to schedules for scenic builds and load-ins
      • Expedite production as needed to meet scheduled deadlines
      • Directly supervise Scene Shop team, including but not limited to: Associate Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Shop Foreman, Carpenters, Painters, Welders and additional overhire employees to delegate, review and track progress of builds, submitting weekly build progress updates to Production Management and CEO
      • Consult closely with Shop Foreman and Carpenters on set construction to ensure design integrity and labor efficiency
      • Host Scene Shop visits for designers and other creative team members to advance troubleshooting and collaboration
      • Collaborate with other departments on planning, execution and installation of cross-departmental technical elements
      • Coordinate transportation of scenic elements from Scene Shop to the performance venue for load-in and installation
      • Lead shop and stage scenic crew throughout the load-in and installation of each set into the performance venues
      • Consistently deliver scenic elements on time and at (or under) budget
    • Tech, Previews, and Show Maintenance
      • During tech, work with Scenic Designer and TD staff to track, prioritize and execute scenic notes
      • Promptly respond to applicable production notes given in Rehearsal or Performance Reports
      • Perform routine (weekly, at minimum) safety checks of all scenic elements during performance weeks
