We are thrilled to have Jess Godwin, singer-songwriter and musical theatre actress come to the area to share her Shameless program with the youth of Aurora.

Currently Jess has been piloting Shameless in Chicago Public Schools, but we felt it an important program to bring to students in the greater Aurora area. Shameless is a performance and a collaborative songwriting workshop for middle and high school students that gives voice to hidden feelings of shame, jealousy, comparison, and the need for perfection that so many of us have, and teaches fundamentals of moving beyond them. Having struggled herself with some of these issues as a professional performer, Jess Godwin feels it’s important to be a role model for young people to help overcome shame stigmas and develop an empowered sense of identity. In this workshop, she will incorporate original music, live electronic looping, and candid stories about her experiences as a kid, as an adult, and as a woman in the music industry. She will lead open discussions and a free-write with the students that will help them express and work out their own experiences on this issue. At the end of the workshop, Jess will guide the students in collectively creating a short, original song based on our discussion. It is a freeing and empowering experience for students. Please watch the short documentary below about the program.
